DESCRIPTION OF EVENT:   The John P. McGovern Museum of Health and Medical Science (The Health Museum) located at 1515 Hermann Drive, Houston, Texas 77004 is featuring a special 2-day event on May 20th-21st called Social Silence – Hepatitis C, The Hidden Disease.  

The purpose of the event is to educate people of all walks of life about Hepatitis C – how it is contracted, how to avoid it and how to treat it.  Twenty works-of-art, depicting the artist’s interpretation of one or many facets of Hepatitis C will be displayed and voted on by the general public.

SCHOLARSHIP: The general public will vote on the top three winners.  First prize is a $750 scholarship, second prize is a $500 scholarship and third prize is a $300 scholarship.  In addition, the first prize winner’s artwork will be auctioned at the American Liver Foundation Gala set for August, 2016.  

ABOUT THE HEALTH MUSEUM: The Health Museum, a non-profit organization, is Houston's most interactive science learning center and a member institution of the world-renowned Texas Medical Center. Located in the heart of the city's rich and varied Museum District, The Health Museum's mission is to foster wonder and curiosity about health, medical science and the human body. The Museum treasures Houston’s diverse population and welcomes individuals of all backgrounds.

ELIGIBILITY:  The competition is open to all Texas artists and street art/graffiti artists – professional and amateur who are 18 years or older.

FEES: There is no entry fee, but all artists will be selected at the discretion of The Health Museum.

RULES FOR ENTRY:  Submit sample images of your work.  The Health Museum will select the 20 finalists based on these submissions. 

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES: Once the twenty artists have been selected, they will be contacted via email.  The artist is required to create a work of art that depicts one or many facets of Hepatitis C, using their creative interpretation.

  • The art can be created using your own canvas/board or can be created on a 4’x8’ sanded plywood board, supplied by The Health Museum.  The board must be picked up from The Health Museum no later than May 6th at 4pm.
  • The art must be appropriate for public viewing.
  • The art must be completed, completely dry and delivered to The Health Museum no later than Tuesday, May 17th at 4:00 pm.  The Health Museum will provide the stands for the art.
  • Any expense involved in transporting the art to The Health Museum is at the artist’s expense.

LIABILITY & AGREEMENT: Works will be insured while on the premises of THM. However, THM cannot be responsible for damage or loss during transit. THM retains the right to display and reproduce work accepted for this exhibition for publicity and promotional purposes. Artists retain the rights to their own artwork however, the first place winner artwork will be retained for auction.  All other works of art must be taken with the artist after May 21st at 5pm.

- Artists selected for the exhibition must deliver their work no later than Friday, May 13, 2016.

Applicant photo and bio submission deadline:  MAY 4, 2016

Applicant notification sent:  no later than May 6, 2016

Pick up 4’ x 8’ plywood board at The Health Museum – from April 18 – through May 6th between 10:00 am – 4:30 pm

Deliver competed work to The Health Museum – Tuesday, May 17th between 10:00 am – 4:30 pm

Exhibition Dates:  MAY 20-21, 2016 at The Health Museum (Artist must be present on May 21st from 10 am – 5 pm)

Winners Announced:  MAY 21, 2016 at 4:30 pm.  All works of art (besides the 1st place winner) must be taken with the artists at 5 pm.
